St.Lucia / the Pitons © 2004 Rolf Weijburg |
|
Westward, Key Largo © 2010 William Bock |
Rolf Weijburg is currently
working on a series of etchings of the world's twenty smallest independent
countries as his subject. This again takes Rolf on extensive travels. Among the
works currently on view are images of Grenada, St. Lucia/The Pitons, St.
Lucia/The Castries, St. Kitts, St. Vincent & The Grenadines #’s I, II & III.
Rolf Weijburg was born in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, in 1952. Originally
studying social geography and cartography at the University of Utrecht, he
switched to the Academy of Fine Arts in the same town and concentrated on
printmaking and the graphic arts. He has followed the tradition of many Dutch
artists since the 17th century who traveled abroad.
His work would best be described as ‘travel stories’ or, as: "a
documented inventory of various parts of the world -- a Dutch artist’s way to
remember his journeys and share them with us." The late Franz Geierhaas, teacher
and art historian, in his book The Creative Act speaks of the this passion for
traveling as satisfying an artist’s need to explore diverse cultural, social,
geographical and aesthetic components abroad. Additionally, in Rolf’s case Franz
notes that Rolf’s passion for traveling and gathering in the world is a
yearning, almost Rousseauian, for the simple life - a return to nature.
William Bock explores the
everglades and the upper Florida Keys in a series of paintings and multimedia
prints. The viewer is further engaged with a section of fossilized sea life
native to South Florida that relates to the depicted landscapes
Descended from a long line of artists, William Bradford Bock is referenced in
the Blue Book of American Artists. His award winning paintings are included in
many prestigious collections. Since moving his studio to Broward County he has
shown his work at The International Game Fishing Hall of Fame, Las Olas Art
Center, The Dcota, and other locations.
Bock’s murals and paintings enhance the homes of private collectors through the
United States and abroad.
