Robin Gary Wood was born in New Jersey, raised in Vermont, studied art at New York University, Ecole de Beaux Arts, Paris, the American College/Paris, Sorbonne, and the Academie de Port Royas/Paris. During this period he traveled extensively throughout Europe, Egypt and Africa to observe their cultures first hand and to learn about their art outside of a museum setting. These experiences have had a lasting impact on Wood, who is universal in his approach and unique in his ability to paint using a variety of mediums and styles. He is proficient in both impressionistic landscapes, as in "Homage To Boudin" and hard edge, pointalist renderings, as in homage to Lichtenstein. Most impressively Wood has developed a unique and compelling style of his own. He says:
"In the art that touches me, there is a quality of spiritual timelessness. From the prehistoric cave painting of Lascaux, the African and Egyptian experience, to early Christian art, I see this same quality. I attempt to reflect this in my work whatever the technique or subject."
The artist's primary medium is oil on canvas or board; his most distinctive subjects are the landscape and the still life. Ranging in size from small icon-like images to larger compositions; his paintings and drawings capture a mood that is at the same time traditional and contemporary in mood.
