Antique Map Restoration and Conservation
The collection, conservation, and restoration of antique maps is a
growing and exciting field in which knowledge and professional practices
play an important part in retaining the value of any collection. Our
restoration and conservation staff works with and under the direct
supervision of William Bock MFA and Associate of the AIC (American
Institute for the Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works). Mr. Bock
has over 25 years experience in the restoration and conservation of
public and private collections including The Asbury Collection, State
Farm of South Florida clients and The Ft. Lauderdale Museum of Art.
The restoration department has extensive experience working on maps and
prints by Bleau, Hondius, Mercator, D'Anville, Van Kuelen, Jefferson,
Vaugondy, Roberts and more.
Conservation and restoration
services we provide for maps include:
• deacidification to
neutralize the pH of the paper and minimize continuing yellowing,
spotting or fading of the map.
• rehydration to restore the
elasticity of the paper minimizing and preventing brittleness, cracking
and de-lamination of color.
• conservation cleaning to remove
stains, foxing, irregularities in color, or darkening of paper.
• paper repairs including patching, relining.
• repair and
refresh faded hand coloring using the finest watercolors.
conservation framing services utilizing traditional and green recycled
moldings, acid free matting and backing, UV glass and acrylic glazing
options and museum mounting cradling and hinging of artwork.
