Sally Owens
Yosemite, California
Tic Tac Woodpecker
Watercolor on paper, 16x16
Sally's image combines the well known form of a game of Tic-Tac-Toe, with native reeds, and the skull and feathers of a woodpecker.  The simple composition is balanced, restful, and symbolic.  The use of bone, feathers, and  reeds gives the piece a primitive, naturalistic quality. The composition is also  remeniscent of  patterns used in traditional american quiltmaking.  The woodpecker and the reeds are native to Yosemite valley, and their combination in this image implies a totemic inner meaning that is both playful and mysterious.
